suck my goldman sachs- next to my studio - it’s been there a couple of weeks now.
It’s a picture of David Cameron - the Conservative party leader. Originally taken for the UK Conservative party campaign, the picture backfired because many people thought it was too artificial - he does look very airbrushed. Anyway, the picture has been reappropriated on a billboard in Dalston, London, by an artist called Dr D, with the added caption “suck my goldman sachs”, which could be either a reference to Cameron’s Bullingdon Club friend Sebastian Grigg, a partner and managing director at Goldman Sachs; or a dig at the Conservative party for supposedly favouring banks’ interests over ordinary people’s. David Cameron is in the precarious position of having to woo the world’s most powerful banks like Goldman Sachs while assuring Middle England that he won’t give that most hated profession an easy time. Recently, Cameron refused to condemn a tax on City bonuses. In December 2009, speaking to a gathering of top financiers, he said: “My father was a stockbroker, my grandfather was a stockbroker, my great-grandfather was a stockbroker.” The City, he assured them, was in his blood. Those present, who included Bob Diamond, president of Barclays, and Richard Gnodde, the co-chief executive of Goldman Sachs in London, approved.
The irony is that this view holds the Conservatives as supporting banking and financial interests, whereas New Labour also embraced the City in order to get into power. The thinking was, deregulate and use the money from increased tax revenues to fund more hospitals and schools.
